In order to understand the play, its characters and their motivation, it is important that you have good working knowledge of the literary tradition on which the play draws and the time in which it was set. You should therefore use the internet to make notes in your exercise book, containing as much information as possible about the following things:

ReplyDeleteA leading play writer of the 20th century born October 1995 NYC to a womens clothing manufacture she lost everything dure in the 1930’s to the economic collapse. He worked in a warehouse so he could afford enough money to go to university of Michigan. He got set back at an early time this nearly stopped him writing full stop, but he persisted and won an award on his play called “ all my sons” in 1947.
2- the theatre of ancient Greece is a theatrical culture the flourished in ancient Greece. The tragedies are based on human suffering. Tragedy has kept its importance in Greek traditions.

ReplyDeleteArthur miller was an American playwright he was born in 1915 and died in 2005 he died at the age of 89 after a very successful life including being married to Marilyn Monroe writing A View from the Bridge a play written about New York city in the 1940’s which was a perfect area for him as he was born in 1915 in Harlem.
2.Greek tragedies
had a planned outcome from the very beginning, as the name suggests it was a tragedy because of the characters main flaws it made the characters doomed from the start.
3.The story of Oedipus Rex
About a child who kills his father and marries his mother as he challenges the Gods. A Protagonist plays the main character.
4. It was hard for Italians to immigrate to America in the 1940’s as they were enemies of war. Italy was a poor country after the war as it was not funded like Germany but as they arrived on the eastern coast of the USA they were not liked and so were poor here as well as they were most likely the first fired and the last hired.

ReplyDelete1) Arthur Miller: Arthur Miller was born on 17th October 1915 and died on 10th February 2005. He was from Harlem in New York. He studied in University of Michigan. In his early life he studied journalism and worked as a reporter. During these years he wrote his first play “No villain”. He than decided to switch is major to English and won the Avery Hopwood Award for No villain. After he graduated he joined the Federal Theatre project, than he wrote radio plays.
Some plays that he wrote:
• The man who had all the luck (1940)
• All my sons (1946-7)
• A memory of two Mondays (1955)
He wrote A View From The Bridge in 1955 and was on Broadway along with the Memory Of Two Mondays.
2) Greek tragedies: Greek tragedies were when the main/ central characters suffer a non accidental misfortune in which reflects on the hero’s actions.
Protagonist is the main character in a faction which is usually the hero.
3)The story of Oedipus Rex: this story is about person who was left in the woods by his parents when he was a baby because his fate was to kill his birth father and marry birth mother, his father also ordered a shepherd to make a pin that his father pinned on his feet to stop him crawling away. However he was rescued and was adopted by the king and queen of Corinth who couldn’t have children of their own.
Then when he grew older he learned about his fate and ran away. He arrived at Thebes and asked everyone who came there for a riddle. They took him to the Sphinx and she asked him her riddle which was:
“What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet in the noon and three feet in the evening?”
The sphinx killed herself due to being upset to him answering her riddle correctly.
He killed his father and married Queen Jocasta (his mother). In many year they had four children.
However then a plague came to their town and it killed many people. He sent a messenger to find out why this was happening and he was that he was a bad man because he killed his father. He then poked out his own eyes with a stick as his punishment.

ReplyDeleteTragedy is a form of art based on human suffering that offers its audience pleasure. Tragedy refers itself to a specific tradition of drama. The meaning of protagonist means a black person who backs a politician or a team. Protagonist means the leading character, hero, or heroine of drama or other literary work. A proponent for or advocate of a political cause, social program ect. The first character in ancient greek drama, who played not only the mail role but also other roles when the main character was offstage.
Arthur Miller was born on the 17th October, 1915 in Harlem, New York City, New York. Arthur later on died in Roxbury Connecticut, USA on the 10th February, 2005. He was an American play writer and essayist. He was commonly known for his prominent figure in American theatre, writing many, many plays. Some of his well known work was All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, and A View from the Bridge.
ReplyDeleteGreek tragedies are the oldest form of tragedy. It’s a type of dance-drama. They’re compositions written to be performer by a group of actors in which a central character called a tragic protagonist or hero suffers serious disasters, which are not accidental an as a result mean nothing. However is significant because the misfortune is normally with hero’s actions.
1. Arthur Miller was an American playwright and an essayist. He wrote dramas such as ‘all my sons’. Miller married his college sweet heart called Mary Slattery they have two children together. His career as a writer lasted 7 decades. Miller was considered as one of the best dramatists of the twentieth century. He died of heart failure after battling cancer.
ReplyDelete3.Oedipus was a mythical Greek king of Thebes. He fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, of saying this it brought disaster too the city and family.
Omerta what does it mean? : It’s a code of silence often used in the criminal organisation such as the mafia. Where does it come from? There are many theories from which language it relates to such as Spanish, Greek and Latin.
ReplyDeleteLife and Culture in New York in the 1940s. Life and culture in the 1940s is known as the golden age and is soon after World War 2 ended and blacks weren’t seen as a lesser race the production of war pulled America out of the great depression creating a generally better way of life.
Italian Immigration to America in the 1900s – 1940s about 4 million Italians mainly from Sicily moved to America for a better way of life.

5)sweets where cheep sweets where candy was penny small chocolate and soda was 3cents , lots of small food shops and cherry coke soda had just been brought out in a glass bottle and a new coke came out small bakery’s on most small streets.
After school all the boys from the block would play hide and seek with 20+ kids till after dark,
4)musiline lost the war and became poor and could not afford to live so they all immigrated to America because it was the land of the free
